Appendix Surgery

Evaluation and surgical treatment for suspected appendicitis.

Appendicitis is inflammation of the appendix and can progress quickly. Typical symptoms may include worsening abdominal pain, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting or fever, but the pattern is not identical in every patient. Because several conditions can mimic appendicitis, urgent clinical assessment is important when symptoms are concerning.

How appendicitis is evaluated

Assessment may include the history of pain, abdominal examination and selected blood or urine tests. Ultrasound or CT imaging may be advised when the diagnosis is uncertain or when the clinical situation requires additional information.

Treatment when appendicitis is confirmed

Appendectomy, the surgical removal of the appendix, is a common treatment when surgery is indicated. The operation may be performed laparoscopically or through an open incision depending on the patient’s condition, the surgeon’s assessment and what is found during the procedure.

Why timing matters

Untreated appendicitis can lead to complications such as perforation, abscess or infection inside the abdomen. For that reason, rapidly worsening or persistent symptoms should not be managed by waiting for an online diagnosis.

After appendix surgery

Recovery varies according to whether the appendix was uncomplicated or perforated, the type of surgery and the patient’s general health. Wound care, diet, activity and follow-up instructions should be individualized at discharge.

Seek urgent medical care for worsening symptoms

Severe or increasing abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, fever, marked weakness, abdominal swelling or a sudden deterioration should be assessed promptly. After surgery, increasing wound redness, discharge, persistent fever or worsening abdominal symptoms also require medical review.
